10 Quick Tips for Creating Content

So you’ve decided to kick your marketing up a notch in 2015 by adding a blog to your company website. It’s a smart decision, since adding a blog to your company website can increase traffic and sales leads – and who doesn’t want more business, right?

But before you get bogged down in the details, here are ten quick tips to help you make your blog the best it can be:

  1. Be consistent. Consistent posting – once a month, once a week, once a day – will go a long way toward building an audience for your message. There’s nothing wrong with starting slow and building up momentum toward your desired posting schedule, just so long as you stick to it.
  2. Be real. Blogging is a conversation, first and foremost. Your posts should use language that makes sense to your readers. Write for real people, not Google. Google will take care of itself.
  3. Pay attention to mechanics. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure – all are important, and getting these elements right will help to build trust.
  4. Vary post lengths. Some topics require a lot of words, and others don’t. There is no such thing as a perfect word count, and forcing a topic into a specific post length can do more harm than good. Don’t write 3000 words when 300 words will do, and vice-versa.
  5. Include images. The human brain is hard-wired to process images, a fact that’s especially helpful in engaging your audience. Additionally, images can help to illustrate a point or give a skimmer a reason to keep reading.
  6. Solve problems. While the temptation may be to promote, promote, promote, don’t lose sight of your customer. Answer his questions and solve his problems. Make your content about your customer, not about you.
  7. Plan ahead. The products and services your business offers can serve as a guide for post topics. Is there an area of your business that you’d like to develop? Plan some posts that will bring that area to the forefront.
  8. Work ahead. Deadlines are your friend. Setting a deadline for publishing posts will help to push you forward. Getting a post or two ahead will give you some room to adjust and respond to any feedback you may receive.
  9. Have someone else proof your content. A fresh pair of eyes can help to catch wonky grammar, sentence fragments, or style issues that you may have missed.
  10. Don’t get hung up on numbers. There are lots of ways to measure the effectiveness of your content, but the numbers don’t always tell the whole story. Take your analytics with a grain of salt.

Blogging can benefit your business in numerous ways, but like any other aspect of your business, it requires planning and commitment. By starting strong and remaining consistent, your blog can help to build your business for the long term. Give it time and the rewards will materialize.
