How to Write a Blog Post for Your Potential Customers

I have a topic, but how do I write a blog post about it?

If you’ve established a list of topics based on the four kinds of blog posts listed in my last article, you’re ready to begin.

But wait. Now you’re saying, “I have a topic, but how do I write a blog post about it?”

Writing comes easily to some people, and others struggle with the process. Fortunately, there is a way to outline your post that will help you to more easily write it. Use the following questions as a worksheet. Mark it up, write in the margins, answer the questions, and your blog post will come together.

Answer these questions:

  1. What is a symptom that your customers are experiencing?
    • I’m uncertain about the future of my millions of dollars.
    • I lose time at work every week because my computer gives me fits.
    • I’m buying an older home that has ceramic shingles, is that going to be a problem?
  2. What is the real cause of that symptom?
    • I’m uncertain about the present status of my millions of dollars.
    • My computer is a Gateway running Windows 95, is that bad?
    • I don’t know how much it will cost to get a new roof, ceramic or otherwise.
  3. What does your company/your people/your product offer as a cure for the real cause?
    • Face to face budget planning and consulting
      Not: We give you advice on tracking your millions
      Better: We can meet with you and talk about what your goals are for your millions, what you are doing now with your millions, and what foreseeable plans you need to make for your millions. We will give you custom-tailored advice that will help you make the best decisions for the future of your millions.
    • New stable computers with maintenance plans
      Not: Upgrade now for less!!!
      Better: Instead of paying your employees to troubleshoot their PC problems when they should be thriving at your business, let’s talk about computers that are up to current standards, run reliably, and serve your employees without frustrating them.
    • Synthetic roof shingles that look like ceramic but are cheaper
      Not: Free estimates on your new roof
      Better: We have a lot of roofing products for older homes that can preserve the charm of the original without costing a fortune.
  4. What emotional impact or happy vision of the future will they experience once they’ve acted on what your company did for them(and use the same language as number 1 if you can)?
    • Be secure knowing that your millions are on a steady course to survive the uncertainties of the future.
    • You and your employees will be happy to do their real work instead of fighting their computers.
    • You can enjoy living in a historic house without compromising style or going broke.
  5. What action do they take? What will be the next step after they do it? How can they do it right now?
    • Call today and we’ll tell you what documents you’ll need for us to work with you to make a plan for your present and your future.
    • Fill in the form (number of computers, type of business, contact info) and we’ll make a time to come meet with you and show you how some new low-maintenance computers can help your business work more efficiently.

Once you answer these questions, you’ll have a blog post!

The Importance of Editing

It’s tempting to hit “publish” right after you’re finished writing… but don’t! Don’t send your new blog post out into the world without doing a little editing first. Many writers set their first draft aside for a while and work on other things, and then come back to the draft with fresh eyes. It’s not a bad idea. Making sure your blog post is grammatically correct, free of typos, and properly organized before you publish it will help build your credibility with your readers. And, perhaps even more importantly, such due diligence helps with your ranking in Google.
